Bluewater’s contentious parking by-law was challenged at their meeting on Monday (January 15) when councillors submitted Notices of Motion requesting specific exceptions.
Councillor Scott Harris submitted a Notice of Motion addressing a temporary parking and traffic by-law exemption for Huron Auto Body in Hensall.
Manager of Public Works Dave Kester said that the business was in violation of two municipal parking bylaws, for which this exemption would apply.
Councillor Harris explained that the owner is in the process of purchasing property and constructing a storage facility on an adjacent lot which would allow them to move the vehicles off of the street.
Mayor Paul Klopp emphasized the historical use of the location for parking and argued that the exemption would support a long-standing local business.
He expressed support for the motion, citing the business’s contribution to the community over the years.
Huron Auto Body wasn’t the only one looking for a temporary exemption, a private residence in Dashwood that has historically used a paved section of the boulevard for parking was presented to council by Councilor Joey Groot – with a history of being utilized in this manner with municipal encouragement as early as 1979.
The exemptions will be put to a vote at an upcoming meeting.
