A concerning incident of fraud has prompted an ongoing investigation by the Middlesex OPP.
On February 3, 2024, at 8:38 a.m., law enforcement responded to a report from an individual who fell victim to a deceptive job advertisement on a social networking website.
The victim, seeking employment, responded to the online job posting and was subsequently manipulated by the fraudulent employer – the victim was coerced into transferring just under $2,000 to another supposed employee within the company, with a counterfeit cheque of the same amount mailed to the victim to “reimburse” them.
The investigation into this specific case is ongoing.
The OPP underscores the importance of verifying unsolicited requests and encourages individuals to exercise caution before sharing personal information or transferring funds.
