You may recall a recent story that myFM ran about the county’s reluctance to provide meeting recordings to the public – as of council’s meeting last Wednesday, that’s due to change.
A move to publically release meeting recordings on YouTube saw resounding support from multiple members.
Mayor of South Huron George Finch, echoing sentiments shared by many councilors, said that the move would increase transparency.
County Clerk Susan Cronin said that they hope to post the meetings on YouTube, which meet the necessary closed captioning standards at no cost, making recordings accessible to a broader audience.
The positive impact of similar practices in neighboring municipalities was underscored by councilors. Mayor of Huron East Bernie MacLellan shared insights into the significant viewership of meeting recordings that they’ve seen in his municipality.
The decision was met with enthusiasm from councilors familiar with similar systems, such as those implemented in South Huron and the Town of Goderich. Mayor Trevor Bazinet highlighted the advantages of providing meeting recordings, emphasizing its role in fostering transparency and facilitating information sharing among council members and the public.
Although council was supportive of the move, at this time, it isn’t known when the county will adopt this change.
