The Municipality of Bluewater has officially adopted its 2024 budget – and rate increases seem to be inevitable.
The decision, made Monday’s (March 4) council meeting, follows five dedicated budget sessions in which council members evaluated community needs while minimizing tax rate increases.
Mayor Paul Klopp emphasized the council’s conscientious approach, stating,
“As Council, we meticulously evaluate the services we deliver to our community, the associated costs, and the potential impact on our residents. While a zero-tax-rate increase would be ideal, current economic factors necessitate a pragmatic approach to sustainably maintain crucial services and infrastructure.”
The key highlights of the 2024 budget include substantial investments in various sectors:
Roads and Bridges: A budget allocation of $3.3 million will address infrastructure requirements, with a particular focus on expanding the Stanley Public Works Shop.
Recreation and Parks: Recognizing the importance of community well-being, $729,000 will be channeled into enhancing parks and recreational facilities, fostering active lifestyles and community cohesion.
Fleet, Equipment, and Fire Services: To uphold operational efficiency, $1 million has been earmarked for maintaining essential vehicles and machinery.
Waste Water Treatment: Pending successful grant funding, a significant investment of $9.2 million is slated for expanding the Bayfield Waste Water Treatment Plant, underscoring the municipality’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
For taxpayers, the approved budget translates to a $21.6 million allocation for operating expenses and $15.6 million for capital investments, culminating in a total municipal property tax levy of $10 million. Consequently, residents can anticipate an overall tax rate increase of 6.7%.
Mayor Klopp reiterated the collaborative effort between council members and staff in crafting a budget that not only facilitates sustainable growth but also addresses community needs effectively. He concluded,
“By prioritizing collaboration and foresight, we’ve crafted a budget that strikes a balance between fiscal responsibility and proactive community development, ensuring a prosperous future for Bluewater.”
