Everyone knows that first aid training can make all the difference in a medical emergency, but what about a mental health one?
You can get some training about how to help in times of crisis with upcoming Mental Health First Aid Training Session, scheduled for April 5th at the Hensall Heritage Hall.
Grace Bonnett, a facilitator for Mental Health First Aid Training, hosted by the Gateway Centre of Excellence for Rural Health says that their training empowers individuals in rural areas gain vital skills to address mental health and substance use issues.
The upcoming session is a collaborative effort between the Gateway Centre and the Municipality of Bluewater. Thanks to a partnership with Hensall Disctric Co-op, the training will be subsidized, making it accessible and affordable to local businesses, non-profit organizations, and service clubs.
But what exactly is mental health first aid?
Bonnett says that just as knowing how to address physical health emergencies is crucial, understanding and supporting individuals experiencing mental health declines is equally vital.
In rural communities, where stigma surrounding mental health issues often prevails, such initiatives are especially critical. Bonnett emphasizes the importance of increasing awareness and reducing stigma.
The Mental Health First Aid Training Session stems from the Be Well Work Well project, a community-based research endeavor that examined the pandemic’s impact. By addressing the identified need for mental health training, the initiative aims to equip the community with the necessary tools.
Individuals interested in attending the training session or organizations seeking to participate are encouraged to reach out to the organizers via email at mhfatraininggateway@gmail.com or through the Gateway Centre’s website. The deadline for registration is March 20th.
Plans are underway to expand the training to Exeter and Grand Bend in the spring – so if you’re worried you’ve missed your chance, don’t worry! Plenty of opportunity awaits.
