Starting this week, some Canadians will see their pay rise.
As of Monday, the federal minimum wage increased from $16.65 per hour to $17.30 per hour. This change matches the 3.9 percent rise in Canada’s annual average Consumer Price Index (CPI) for 2023.
Around 30,000 Canadians working in the public sector or federally-regulated private industries will benefit from this increase. Employers are required to adjust their payrolls to ensure all workers, including interns, receive the new hourly wage.
Ontario’s current minimum wage is $16.55 per hour and will increase to $17.20 per hour starting October 1st. If there’s a difference between the federal and provincial rates, employers must pay the higher rate.
