You might think that in a rural community, we have fewer resources to support people struggling with mental health and addictions, but if you ask this local practitioner, you couldn’t be further from the truth.
Lynn Higgs, Manager of Inpatient Mental Health and Addictions at Alexandra Marine and General Hospital in Goderich, as well as Manager of Huron Community Mental Health Services, says that close-knit relationships and collaborative efforts among various organizations within Huron County provide a lasting continuity of care.
Recognizing the importance of comprehensive care, Higgs stressed the significance of a network of support and seamless collaboration with partner organizations, including hospitals and community agencies. She emphasized that holistic care involves addressing not just the immediate mental health concerns but also related issues such as addictions and homelessness, which are prevalent across the board – even in rural areas.
In addressing the stigma surrounding mental health services, Higgs emphasized the importance of making individuals feel comfortable and assured that there is no wrong door to access help. Through initiatives like the Huron Perth Helpline and Crisis Response Team, they aim to provide timely assistance and support to anyone in need.
Reflecting on the evolving mental health landscape, Higgs noted a positive shift towards openness and acceptance, facilitated by increased public dialogue and awareness campaigns. Looking towards the future, she expressed hope for continued collaboration, support, and advocacy to further decrease stigma and ensure accessible mental health services for all.
As Huron County continues to strive towards inclusive and accessible mental health services, the message remains clear: no one should face mental health challenges alone.
