April is Oral Health Month in Canada and the Oral Health Team at Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) is using this month to talk about “friendly” dental visits. These visits are free and available at HPPH dental clinics for children who are three years old and younger.
Children should see a dental professional within six months of getting their first tooth or by their first birthday. A friendly visit to an HPPH dental clinic helps children get used to a dental setting and someone looking in their mouth. It’s also a chance to catch any oral health problems early.
Free friendly dental visits for children aged three and under are available by appointment at HPPH dental clinics in Clinton, Listowel, Stratford, and Wingham.
During a friendly dental visit, a dental hygienist will check the child’s mouth for any issues like early signs of tooth decay. They might apply fluoride varnish to the teeth, which helps prevent cavities. Parents or caregivers will also receive oral health education and can ask questions about their child’s dental care.
Families who meet income requirements can also get help enrolling their child in Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO). This program offers free dental services for children and youth under 17 from low-income households.
Oral health is important because baby teeth are necessary for eating, smiling, talking, and making space for adult teeth. Starting good oral health habits early can keep a child’s smile healthy for life.
Parents can call 1-888-221-2133 ext. 3561 to book an appointment.
