Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb spoke at the Huron County Federation of Agriculture annual forum at the Clinton Legion in early April. He mentioned that a lot of the food made in Huron County is sent out of the country for processing.
This is a problem that Huron and Bruce County producers are familiar with because they see how much food is made in their county every day, but it has to be sent somewhere else for processing since we don’t have enough capacity here.
Lobb believes that having control over our food production is important, along with other aspects like healthcare, defense, and borders. He thinks the Federal government should educate Canadians on the importance of our food production, processing, and food security.
This should be a significant investment, especially since some countries are facing a decrease in food production, which is concerning when trying to feed billions of people worldwide.
Depending too much on other countries for food processing makes us vulnerable, according to Lobb. He thinks it’s time for Canadians to invest more in the food processing industry to reduce this vulnerability.
