Sixteen students from Central Huron Secondary School’s jazz band will be competing on the national stage in Toronto on May 15th, after receiving gold standing at Kiwanis regional music festival in London on April 18.
Achieving gold indicates that the band has met expectations and demonstrated top-tier playing.
That was Spencer TenHague, the euphonium section leader, grade 12 senior music student, and president of the music council – he expressed his pride in the gold medal the band received.
The jazz band were not alone in their achievement, with the intermediate and senior bands also placing at the competition.
When asked about the challenges at MusicFest Nationals, TenHauge says that the pressure will be on.
Reflecting on the broader benefits of participation in arts and culture programs, TenHauge emphasized the importance of creativity and different ways of thinking that the arts foster.
Looking ahead to Nationals, TenHauge expressed a desire to do well, but said that wasn’t the most important part.
Regardless of their performance at Nationals, the band can definitely rest well knowing that their placement regionally is a high achievement.
