April is Oral Health Month in Canada and the Oral Health Team at Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) is using this month to talk about “friendly” dental visits. These visits are free and available at HPPH dental clinics for children who are three years old and younger.
Registered Dental Hygienist, Anna Read says while April is Oral Health Month in Canada, this is something the health unit advocates for all year long.
A friendly visit to an HPPH dental clinic helps children get used to a dental setting and someone looking in their mouth. It’s also a chance to catch any oral health problems early.
While most people have a family dentist, most do not treat children under three years of age, which is why HPPH is advocating for each parent to bring their children to see them.
During a friendly dental visit, a dental hygienist will check the child’s mouth for any issues like early signs of tooth decay. They might apply fluoride varnish to the teeth, which helps prevent cavities. Parents or caregivers will also receive oral health education and can ask questions about their child’s dental care.
Families who meet income requirements can also get help enrolling their child in Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO). This program offers free dental services for children and youth under 17 from low-income households.
Oral health is important because baby teeth are necessary for eating, smiling, talking, and making space for adult teeth. Starting good oral health habits early can keep a child’s smile healthy for life.
Free friendly dental visits for children aged three and under are available by appointment at HPPH dental clinics in Clinton, Listowel, Stratford, and Wingham.
