The upcoming Transition Fair, this Saturday at Central Huron Secondary School (CHSS) in Clinton is set to provide vital resources for families and caregivers of students with complex disabilities and aims to guide families through the critical transition period as students approach adulthood.
Learning Services Coordinator, Heather Jones emphasizes that the fair’s purpose is to familiarize parents and caregivers with the support agencies available for their children beyond high school.
The agencies to be highlighted include DSO (Developmental Services Ontario), ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program), Passport funding, Thames Valley Children’s Centre (TVCC), and Community Living organizations, according to Assistant Principal with Learning Services, with AMDSB, Tracey Swart.
Jones highlights the importance of early preparation and understanding services available, including funding, employment support, and residential options. The fair offers presentations from each agency, allowing families to ask specific questions and gain a deeper understanding of accessing services.
The fair aims to alleviate the overwhelming task of navigating policies and services, providing families with a sense of belonging and empowerment. Attendees can expect a flexible schedule, with opportunities to connect with agencies, receive tailored information, and participate in presentations relevant to their needs.
Both Jones and Swart encourage families to attend, emphasizing that even discovering one new resource can significantly impact their child’s life positively. The fair also offers incentives such as surveys for feedback and chances to win prizes.
