Have a drawer full of old batteries, light bulbs and other miscellanious waste that can’t go in your trash can? This Saturday is Huron County Household Hazardous Waste Day!
From 9am – 3pm bring your unused paint, cleaning products, or pesticides to 82 Nelson Street, Exeter for proper disposal – keeping these products out of the landfill is crucial to our environmental sustainability, so why not dispose of them properly.
Here are some common examples of hazardous waste you should consider clearing out, and why they can’t go in your garbage can.
- Cleaning Products: Many household cleaning agents contain hazardous chemicals such as bleach, ammonia, and various solvents. Improper disposal of these products can contaminate soil and water sources.
- Pesticides and Herbicides: Products used to control pests and weeds often contain toxic chemicals. Unused portions or containers with residues should be disposed of according to local regulations.
- Paints and Solvents: Paints, varnishes, paint thinners, and other solvents contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals. Improper disposal can lead to soil and groundwater contamination.
- Batteries: Batteries, especially rechargeable ones like nickel-cadmium and lithium-ion, contain heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, and mercury. These metals can leach into the environment if batteries are not recycled properly.
- Fluorescent Light Bulbs: Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) contain small amounts of mercury. Recycling facilities can safely handle the disposal of these bulbs.
