In the heart of Crediton, Mike and Lindsay Groot, the dynamic duo behind Wholesome Pastures, are rewriting the playbook on farming. Their farm isn’t just about cultivating crops and tending to livestock; it’s a testament to their unwavering commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
“We focus on the soil. We focus on a healthy soil, healthy animals, healthy lifestyle,” Mike explains, outlining their philosophy. At Wholesome Pastures, the emphasis is on creating a thriving ecosystem where every element, from the soil to the animals, plays a vital role.
Their dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. This year, the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority bestowed upon them the prestigious Conservationists of the Year award. It’s a recognition of their efforts to manage their land sustainably, including initiatives like planting windbreaks and creating habitat for wildlife.
They think of their farm as a closed loop – planting cover crops that also serve as feed, rotating crops and more.
But for Mike and Lindsay, this isn’t just about accolades; it’s a way of life deeply rooted in their values. Mike recalls watching the soil blow behind a cultivator as a child, and thinking that it was a waste of a precious resource.
His epiphany came at a conference where he heard about innovative farming practices including no-till “It flipped a switch in my mind,” he recalls. From that moment on, sustainable farming became their guiding principle.
Crucially, they’ve had the support of their families, including Lindsay’s parents, from whom they rent land. This support has been instrumental in their ability to forge ahead with their vision, free from the constraints of traditional farming methods.
Their story resonates with many aspiring farmers who face resistance to change from older generations. Mike and Lindsay’s success serves as a beacon of hope, showcasing that with the right mindset and support, it’s possible to revolutionize the agricultural landscape.
Mike and Lindsay’s passion is infectious – and while they may be modest about their achievements, they’re undeniably pioneers, blazing a trail for the next generation of farmers.
