Huron County Libraries have reported an overwhelmingly positive reaction to their period poverty initiatives.
The initiative, birthed from a directive by the Huron County Council in late 2022, allocated only $1,000 in the 2023 Library budget to kickstart the endeavor. What began as a humble pilot project has now blossomed into a collaborative effort involving women’s shelters, educational institutions, and community centers.
Feedback from surveys and anecdotal accounts saw 90% of respondents affirming libraries as appropriate hubs for dispensing menstrual products. From seniors to pre-teens, and individuals experiencing homelessness, the positive impact resonates across diverse demographics.
Remarkably, the program’s operational costs have remained minimal, thanks to generous donations and volunteer efforts.
Looking ahead, the Task Force is committed to sustaining and expanding the initiative, ensuring continued access to menstrual products across all Huron County Library branches.
