The Municipality of South Huron owns over $400 million in assets, which includes 210 kilometers of water pipe, and 350 kilometers of roads.
That’s according to Mayor of South Huron George Finch – his address at the annual Mayor’s Breakfast at The Barn (Exeter Golf Course) this morning (May 9th) focussed on the assets that the municipality has across the board – from water, to roads and more.
He didn’t shy away from the debt the municipality has incurred in expanding the community, he dictated that the $22 million in debt that South Huron owes would be largely paid off by the end of the 2050’s, and that the debt has positioned the municipality in good standing to receive additional funding from the province.
In his speech, he also tipped his hat to the upcoming Dashwood Fire Station replacement, the ongoing work on Highway 4 in Exeter, as well as upcoming improvements to County Road 83 in Dashwood.
He handed the microphone off to many regional partners including Andrea Loohuizen, Volunteer Coordinator at Southern Huron Connection Centre, Michelle Millar of United Way Perth Huron, Jimmy Trieu, CEO of Huron Health System, and Huron County Warden Glen McNeil.
The Warden highlighted the upcoming roundabout being put in at County Road 83 (Dashwood Road) and Airport Line, which hopes to break ground next year (it’s reportedly currently in the final stages of design and engineering).
Mayor Finch said that it was important to highlight the successful partnerships that the municipality has with other leaders in the region.
Mayor of Lucan-Biddulph Cathy Burghardt-Jesson has come to the table many times in the past alongside Mayor of Lambton Shores Doug Cook as a supporter of the South Huron Hospital, which serves a region well beyond the borders of Huron County.
Investment in infrastructure was highlighted as a key priority for South Huron, positioning the community for growth well into the future.
Across priorities of housing, fire services, infrastructure, debt and more, the common thread was this: South Huron is hoping to position itself advantageously for projected future growth, allowing the community to continue to expand, and prosper.
