MPP for Perth-Wellington, Matthew Rae, recently announced more than $882,000 in funding for local public transportation. This money comes from the province’s Gas Tax program.
Rae mentioned, “Public transportation is really important in our rural areas. The Gas Tax program helps our rural towns and cities provide this essential service in Perth-Wellington. Our government is committed to supporting our rural communities.”
The Ontario government is investing nearly $380 million across the province to improve local transit in 102 municipalities through the Gas Tax program.
Gas Tax funding depends on how much gasoline was sold in the province the previous year. For every litre of gas tax revenue collected, two cents go to the Gas Tax program.
This year, there’s an extra $3 million to help municipalities expand their transit systems.
The Gas Tax money can be used for various transit improvements like extending service hours, buying new buses, adding routes, making transit more accessible, or upgrading transit infrastructure.
Here’s how much each municipality in Perth-Wellington is getting from the Gas Tax program:
- North Perth: $80,090
- Perth East: $73,121
- St. Marys (Perth South): $163,485
- Stratford: $513,030
- West Perth: $53,140
In total, the Gas Tax program is providing $882,866 to these municipalities.
