The Northern Lights were clearly visible in many parts of our region Friday night. Amateur and professional photographers alike took the opportunity and ran with it!
This dazzling display was not just a stroke of luck but a result of a rare astronomical event—a massive solar storm.
The cause behind this stunning phenomenon traces back to a series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center issued a noteworthy observation, identifying extreme geomagnetic storm conditions—reaching a level 5 out of 5 severity. Such intensity in solar activity hadn’t been witnessed since October 2003.
As solar activity nears its peak in the sun’s 11-year cycle, scientists anticipate more intense solar flares and coronal mass ejections, fueling further displays of the Northern Lights in the coming months.
