Renowned Nobel laureate Alice Munro, Wingham native, and celebrated as a master of the short story genre, has passed away at the age of 92. A representative from Penguin Random House Canada confirmed Munro’s death at her residence on Monday.
Munro, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013, had been battling frail health for an extended period.
She was the first Canadian lifelong resident to receive the Nobel Prize and the first to be exclusively recognized for her contributions to short fiction – and following her Nobel win, she stuck to a long procrastinated promise to retire.
Munro’s passing marks the end of an era in contemporary literature, leaving behind a rich tapestry of stories that will continue to inspire and captivate audiences for generations to come.
