Canadian Blood Services issued a formal apology to 2SLGBTQIA+ communities across Canada last weekend, acknowledging the harms inflicted by a former donor eligibility policy.
The policy, which barred sexually active men who have sex with men, and some trans individuals, from donating blood and plasma, has long been a contentious issue.
The apology, delivered by Dr. Graham Sher, Chief Executive Officer of Canadian Blood Services, comes after years of advocacy and collaboration with diverse 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. During an event held at the organization’s head office in Ottawa, Dr. Sher expressed regret for the discrimination, homophobia, transphobia, and HIV stigma perpetuated by the former policy.
Dr. Sher emphasized the importance of earning the trust of all Canadians, reaffirming the organization’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity.
