The South Huron Hospital Foundation is looking to build a new clinic, with a price tag of an estimated $15 million – that’s according to a presentation by Executive Director Krista McCann to South Huron Council yesterday evening (June 3).
The foundation had previously attended council to discuss the future of the clinic.
On September 5th they had tabled a request for funding and council support on a healthcare committee – the request was met with a great deal of resistance in council chambers, with members stating that the hospital was a regional support, and that South Huron shouldn’t be left with more responsibility than was appropriate in terms of health services.
There was however some commitment on behalf of the Municipality, who initiated a study which indicated what other municipalities were doing to support healthcare in their own communities.
Monday’s discussion saw a preliminary announcement, indicating that the foundation intended to move forward with the construction of a new medical centre – although McCann was quick to point out, they aren’t able to proceed alone.
Alongside requesting the presence of the CAO on their steering committee, they also requested assistance from the planning and building departments on project and construction committee, as well as potential involvement from members of council on a communications committee.
Councillor Aaron Neeb praised the move as one that would drive the future of South Huron.
An official announcement of the foundation’s plans is expected at the South Huron Hospital Foundation’s Gala this Friday.
Mayor George Finch offered his congratulations.
Council was largely amicable to the request, and congratulated the Foundation on the move – although a final decision will have to wait until the presentation comes back to council’s next meeting.
