The decision to move Hensall’s Green Waste Facility has not been well received by the community – that’s according to letters from residents received at Bluewater Council’s meeting on Monday (June 3).
Councillor Scott Harris said that since the decision was made at council’s last meeting (on May 21st) he’s received many complaints from members of the community.
That being said, Harris also said that if the community were to rally support against the relocation of the facility to it’s proposed site outside of Zurich, he would stand behind their choice.
According to a report to council on December 23rd, staff have noted occurrences where waste in Hensall has exceeded the posted limit – which is especially common in periods where residents are disposing of yard waste. Additionally, unapproved waste has also been deposited at the site such as food waste, dog waste, and garbage.
Residents expressed their frustration with the decision, citing the convenience of the Hensall location, with Alma Dayman stating:
It is quite likely that a cost savings will be seen by closing this facility but that savings will only be a result of less waste due to lack of accessibility for residents to the new site.
The relocation would see significant cost savings for the municipality as the current site is not compliant with MECP (Ministry for the Environment, Conservation and Parks) requirements, and needs to be relocated to be within the regulations.
