A national monument to a treasured sport is right in your own backyard – the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, just down the road in St. Mary’s.
With 32 acres of land, 4 baseball diamonds, and a museum capturing some of Canada’s greatest contributions to the game, the hall of fame celebrates the players and games that have shaped Canada’s baseball legacy.
But why St. Mary’s? Scott Crawford – Director of Operations says that one of the earliest recorded games in Canada took place in their own backyard.
Southern Ontario was where baseball really got it’s foothold in the mid 1800’s, with the major league being established in 1876.
The diamond in St. Mary’s are still active to this day, so not only is the museum an homage to the history of baseball, but a living hub for the game.
Whether you’re a baseball aficionado, or a rookie, Crawford says that the museum has a few items you won’t want to miss.
Of course, even if you’re not a baseball person, one player that everyone knows is Babe Ruth! They have an autographed bat on display.
Although there’s always something new to see with constantly updating their displays, Crawford says that one upcoming weekend is a can’t miss event.
If you don’t make it out to the induction weekend on the 15th of June, they host Blue Jays watch parties the last Friday of every month, so you can go and rub elbows with fellow baseball fans.
If you’ve never been before, don’t let that frighten you! Crawford says there’s lots to see at the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
He says that the tour is well rounded, whether you’re a contemporary fan, history enthusiast, or a newbie, there’s lots on tap at the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
