In the quiet corners of Huron and Perth, beyond the headlines of crisis intervention, lies a vital narrative often overlooked – the proactive endeavors of the Huron Perth Children’s Aid Society.
Kristian Wilson, Executive Director, says that while intervention is something that they do when necessary, the goal is to give families the tools to help make sure that CAS is never called.
This includes collaborative programs with a myriad of community partners, aiming to fortify families. Wilson says that providing the ability to adapt to difficulties, and meet the needs of a family is proactive, as opposed to reactive.
Wilson challenged the societal tendency to associate children’s aid exclusively with intervention during critical situations – he candidly addressed the historical social disparities linked to children’s aid, emphasizing the society’s ongoing commitment to becoming a proactive force for positive change.
Their extensive repertoire of programs offered by the Children’s Aid Society today covers everything from parenting and anti-human trafficking initiatives to vital food programs and creative outlets for children. These initiatives are often tailored to serve marginalized communities, underscoring the society’s dedication to addressing systemic issues like poverty and food insecurity.
Wilson says that the success of programming is only possible through the partnership of many community organizations.
These alliances, Wilson emphasizes, are not just collaborations but vital strands in the interconnected web of community support.
