The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) had a busy start to summer with their Canada Day Week campaign, targeting bad behaviors on roads, waterways, and trails across the province.
Sadly, one person died in a boating incident over the long weekend. During the campaign, which focused on seatbelt, lifejacket, and helmet laws, the OPP issued 1,287 seatbelt-related charges, 96 charges for lifejacket and marine safety equipment violations, and 34 “no helmet” charges.
In total, 17,889 traffic and marine charges were issued during the campaign from June 21 to July 1, 2024, including:
Speeding: 8,421
Stunt driving: 224
Impaired driving: 447
Distracted driving: 173
The OPP thanks all drivers and passengers who started the summer and celebrated Canada Day safely and encourages them to continue doing so throughout the year.
The OPP is committed to its Provincial Traffic Safety Strategy, aiming to reduce injuries and deaths on over 130,000 kilometers of roadways and nearly 100,000 kilometers of waterways and trails throughout Ontario.
