Huron County council is moving forward with a plan to build a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Highway 83 and Airport Line west of Exeter. This busy area sees a lot of traffic, especially during the summer when travelers head to Grand Bend.
At their June 26th meeting, councilors approved a $2.74-million budget for the single-lane roundabout. Ken Logtenberg from B.M. Ross explained that while a single-lane roundabout was initially proposed in 2023, a two-lane roundabout was also considered for future traffic growth. However, current traffic levels are expected to be manageable for at least the next 20 years.
The single-lane roundabout will be built closer to the existing intersection, requiring some additional space at the corners. Another option to shift the roundabout southwest was considered but ultimately not chosen. Temporary lanes will be created during construction to keep traffic away from the work zone, speeding up the project.
Logtenberg assured that the single-lane roundabout will accommodate large agricultural equipment, thanks to wide lanes and mountable curbs. Bluewater Mayor, Paul Klopp highlighted the safety benefits of roundabouts for moving agricultural machinery through intersections.
South Huron Mayor, George Finch chimed into the conversation in full support.
Work on the intersection will start this year with utility relocation and an archaeological investigation, while construction of the new roundabout is scheduled for 2025.
