Huron County OPP have charged a Goderich-area resident with multiple crimes after a series of car thefts, a break-in, and crashes in Goderich early on July 12th.
Just after 3:20 a.m. on July 12th, OPP received a report of a suspicious vehicle driving erratically near Elgin Avenue in Goderich. Officers found an abandoned, damaged pickup truck on Kingston Street. While investigating, they found another damaged vehicle in a car dealership parking lot on Bayfield Road. The dealership had been broken into and severely damaged. They then saw another vehicle speeding away north on Bayfield Road.
More officers arrived and saw the suspected stolen vehicle driving the opposite direction in the Goderich Square. When an officer tried to stop it, the vehicle sped away onto Elgin Ave, hitting five parked cars and causing extensive damage. Officers arrested the driver, who resisted and assaulted them.
The driver was taken to a local hospital as a precaution and then released. The accused has been charged with several crimes.
The total damage is over $500,000.
A 32 year old, with no fixed address, has been charged with:
Break and Enter – Commit Indictable Offence
Theft of Motor Vehicle (three counts)
Fail to Stop After Accident
Flight From Police Officer
Dangerous Operation
Mischief Over $5,000
Assault a Peace Officer
Resist Peace Officer
Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000 (three counts)
Fail to Comply with Probation Order (two counts)
Possession of Schedule I Substance – Methamphetamine
The accused was held for a bail hearing and remains in custody.
