The United Way Perth Huron is celebrating the winners of its Youth in Action grants this year.
These grants, now in their third year, give $1,000 to youth-led projects in the area. The projects find creative ways to solve problems young people face and help them learn skills useful in other parts of life.
This year, there were 12 grant winners. The grants are for youth ages 14-25. One winner was the Youth Space at the Tanner Steffler Foundation, which helps improve mental health and addiction resources for people ages 12 to 29. Youth volunteers there installed a hygiene pantry for youth participants.
Several school projects got funded this year, like the Students Helping Students program at Stratford District Secondary School. This program had a food station with lunch items to help students who didn’t have enough food.
Students at Stratford High School also worked with the Local Community Food Centre on the Urban Farming Project. This project helped students and community members build connections and learn about farming.
Other projects to receive grants were:
Bedford Intermediate Youth Project (Nancy Campbell Academy)
Building Community Wellness (Listowel District secondary school)
Equitable Living Project (Central Huron secondary school)
Generation Rainbow Collective (Stratford Pride Community Centre)
Microscope Lending Program (Huron County Library)
Motivational Mondays (St. Marys DCVI)
New and Improved Picnic Tables (Stratford District secondary school)
The Kindness Project (South Huron District high school)
You Are Not Alone (Goderich District Collegiate Institute)
