The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC), OPP, and RCMP are warning about scammers pretending to be from the CAFC and police. These fraudsters use fake letters with official logos and spoof police phone numbers.
Here are three common scams to watch out for:
Bank Investigator Scam:
The scammer says they are from your bank, a credit card company, or businesses like Amazon.
They claim there are unauthorized charges or that your account is compromised.
They ask for your credit card info or money to help catch a bad employee.
To make it seem real, they send a fake email with the CAFC logo, asking you to cooperate with a “CAFC investigation” and providing fake contact details.
Tech Support Scam:
The scammer claims your computer has a virus or has been hacked.
They ask for access to your computer, run programs, or change settings.
They might contact you via alarming website pop-ups or unsolicited phone calls, pretending to be from Microsoft or another tech company.
They send a fake email with the CAFC logo, asking you to cooperate with a “CAFC investigation” and providing fake contact details.
Recovery Pitch Scam:
If you’ve been scammed before, they might target you again, promising to recover your money.
They claim to be from a government agency or law enforcement, asking for your help in a “sting” operation.
They send a fake email with the CAFC logo, asking you to cooperate with a “CAFC investigation” and providing fake contact details.
They ask for a payment to assist with the investigation, promising to return the funds, but they never do.
Stay vigilant and verify any suspicious communications. Don’t share personal or financial information with anyone unless you’re sure they’re legitimate.
