A research group from Western University says Canada needs to improve its tornado forecasting to save lives.
The Northern Tornadoes Project found that Environment Canada only issued one tornado warning for a town near Montreal on July 24th, even though four tornadoes occurred that day. The group believes more tornado warnings should be issued and that sending warnings to cellphones has saved lives.
A researcher noted that in 2022, a series of fast-moving windstorms in Ontario and Quebec led to 16 deaths because people couldn’t escape in time. The director of prediction services for Quebec and Ontario at Environment Canada mentioned that predicting weaker tornadoes is more difficult.
The Northern Tornadoes Project, started at Western University in 2017 with support from ImpactWX, works to better detect tornadoes in Canada, improve weather predictions, and understand the effects of climate change.
