The event has had great success in previous years
The ninth annual Turtle Hatchling Release Event is back at Morrison Dam Conservation Area, thanks to the Huron Stewardship Council (HSC) and Ausable Bayfield Conservation.
ABCA Healthy Watersheds Technician, Hope Brock, told us all about the day and how it came to be.
The event has been held annually since 2016, though it was virtual in 2020 and 2021.
Brock, says that turtles are vital to ecosystems. For example, snapping turtles help manage aquatic plants and clean waterways. To help turtles, you can watch for them on roads, assist them safely across roads, protect nests, and report sightings.
At the event, you’ll see turtles being released but will not be able to hold them to keep them stress-free. Trained staff will handle the release. Remember, never release non-native species into the wild.
Admission is free, and you can drop in anytime during the event. Donations are welcome to support turtle conservation in Ontario. Enjoy live reptiles, family-friendly activities, educational displays, and more. There will also be merchandise for sale. To reserve a spot, visit Eventbrite.
Ontario’s turtles face threats like habitat loss and traffic accidents. You can help by enhancing habitats, assisting turtles across roads safely, and supporting local efforts to protect them.
