On August 19th, the Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were asked to find a 22-year-old from Goderich who was overdue. The person’s family reported them missing.
Around 6:00 p.m. that day, the family called the OPP after their loved one, who had set out alone in a kayak from Auburn at 11:00 a.m., had not reached their desired location as expected. Although the kayaker was experienced, they didn’t have a phone, so their location was unknown.
The OPP, along with the Emergency Response Team and Aviation Services, helped search for the kayaker.
After eight hours, the kayaker was found near the Benmiller bridge just after 7:00 p.m. and was safe. The trip had just taken longer than planned.
The OPP remind people who are boating or hiking to always share their plans with friends or family, carry a charged phone, and bring emergency supplies in case things go wrong.
