It’s that time of year when kids head back to school, and some are going for the first time. As children across the province return to class next week, police are urging drivers to stay focused on the road, avoid distractions, and be extra cautious around school zones. Watch for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles, especially near schools.
School buses will also be back on the roads. Yellow flashing lights mean the bus is about to stop, while red flashing lights and the extended “stop” arm mean all vehicles must stop. Drivers who ignore these signals risk endangering children’s lives and could face fines ranging from $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points for a first offense.
Parents should talk with their children about safety, like using sidewalks and crosswalks when walking, and understanding road rules if biking to school. When posting “First Day of School” photos on social media, be cautious and protect your child’s privacy. Avoid sharing their name, age, grade, or the name of their school, and make sure privacy settings are secure.
