International Overdose Awareness Day takes place every year on August 31st to honor those who have lost their lives to drug overdoses and to support individuals battling addiction.
In 2023, the Office of the Chief Coroner reported 16 opioid overdose deaths in Huron Perth, an increase from 11 in 2022. Public Health Nurse Michelle Carter says this day is a very important day.
HPPH encourages overcoming the stigma associated with substance use and highlights that addiction can affect anyone. It’s crucial to recognize the signs of an overdose, which include difficulty staying awake, blue or grey lips or nails, small pupils, cold skin, dizziness, confusion, choking, and slow or stopped breathing.
If you or someone you know uses opioids, carry naloxone, which can temporarily reverse an overdose and provide time for medical assistance. Free naloxone kits are available at HPPH and local pharmacies.
Always call 911 if you witness an overdose and stay with the person until help arrives. The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act ensures protection from drug possession charges when you call 911 to assist someone in an overdose situation.
