Next week, children and teenagers across Huron County will be heading back to school. Many will be walking, some will be biking, and many others will be taking school buses. This means the roads will be busier. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra time for travel and to be careful around school zones to ensure everyone’s safety.
The Huron County OPP is asking all drivers to stay alert for kids near roadways, especially in school zones. Slow down and be prepared for students who might cross the road unexpectedly.
It’s important to know that ignoring a school crossing guard is against the law. You must stop your vehicle until the crosswalk is clear. If a school crossing guard holds up a stop sign, drivers must stop and wait until all people, including the guard, have crossed safely.
Drivers also need to be aware of school buses with flashing red lights. Under the Highway Traffic Act, all drivers approaching or meeting a stopped school bus must stop. If a bus has its overhead red lights flashing, drivers must stop before reaching it, whether they are coming from the front or rear. Drivers approaching from behind must stop at least 20 meters away. No one should move until the bus begins moving or the lights stop flashing.
Failing to stop for a school bus can lead to serious penalties. The first offense can result in a fine of up to $2,000 and six demerit points. A second offense can lead to a fine of up to $4,000, possible jail time, or both, and six demerit points. If the driver is not identified, the vehicle owner can still be charged.
Ignoring a school crossing guard’s stop sign can also result in a $365 fine and four demerit points.
