Bluewater Council took an important step toward enhancing senior programs in the community during council last week (September 3rd). They have decided to apply for a grant from the Seniors Active Living Centres Program Expansion to create a new Seniors Active Living Centre in Bluewater.
This new center, called the “Bluewater Seniors Club,” will offer a variety of activities for older adults. If the grant is approved, Bluewater will receive funding to support programs starting in the spring of 2025. The municipality will also commit to covering 20% of the project’s total cost through the 2025 Operating Budget.
Currently, Bluewater does not have a dedicated seniors center, but there are various programs available at different municipal facilities. The new center aims to provide accessible and affordable programs, including line dancing, chair yoga, gentle fitness classes, and a monthly Men’s Woodworking Club. The popular shuffleboard program from the Hensall Community Centre will also be included.
The grant will cover up to 80% of the annual costs, with a maximum of $50,000 available per year. Bluewater will need to contribute up to $12,500, which can be provided in cash or in-kind contributions.
This initiative is part of the Recreation Master Plan’s goal to expand senior programs and make better use of municipal spaces. If successful, Bluewater could continue to apply for funding in the future to keep the programs running.
