In a move to make history more accessible, Bluewater Council reviewed plans on September 3rd, to improve Knox Presbyterian Church at 2 Bayfield Main Street North.
Council intends to approve a heritage permit for installing railings on the church’s front steps, which is required for the installation to go ahead. They will also consider extending the sidewalk on the east side of the property to enhance pedestrian access to the church and the Bayfield Heritage Conservation District. This proposal will be discussed as part of the 2025 budget.
The church, located in the Bayfield Heritage Conservation District, is addressing accessibility issues. Following a 2023 review, the church board proposed adding railings and a concrete sidewalk to improve access. They also requested that the municipality consider extending the existing sidewalk to better serve visitors.
On August 20th, the Bluewater Heritage Advisory Committee recommended approving the railing installation and considering the sidewalk extension.
The proposal does not affect the current budget. The Council has until November 7th, to issue the permit for the railings, or it will be automatically approved.
The Council’s decisions aim to enhance accessibility while preserving the church’s historic charm, in keeping with the Heritage Conservation District’s goals.
