Every year, people in Canada and around the world take part in the Terry Fox Run to honor Terry Fox, a young Canadian hero, and to support the fight against cancer. This event, held in September, inspires millions and keeps Terry’s dream of finding a cure for cancer alive.
In Exeter, the run will be taking place on Sunday, September 15th. Current organizer of the event, Ann Devries, gave all the details about the run.
Terry Fox was a 21-year-old athlete from British Columbia who lost his right leg to cancer. Instead of letting the disease defeat him, he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. In 1980, he began what he called the “Marathon of Hope,” aiming to run a marathon every day despite the difficulty of running with a prosthetic leg.
Devries told myFM about the history of the run in Exeter.
Initially a small event in Canada, the run has grown into a global movement. Today, people in more than 30 countries take part in the run each year, raising millions of dollars for cancer research. The aim is to raise money and awareness, just like Terry did during his Marathon of Hope.
The Terry Fox Run is not just a fundraising event; it is a powerful symbol of hope, courage, and determination. The run shows that one person’s dream can inspire millions and help us move closer to a world without cancer. To learn more about the Terry Fox Run and how to participate, visit terryfox.org.
