On September 3rd, Jeremy Becker, General Manager of Community and Emergency Services, shared exciting news with South Huron Council. The Ontario Government has introduced a new Fire Protection Grant for 2024 aimed at supporting cancer prevention efforts in municipal fire departments.
The grant program, part of the 2024 Provincial Budget, will distribute $10 million annually over the next three years. This funding is specifically for fire departments in Ontario to enhance their cancer prevention measures.
The grant will help firefighters by providing Gear Extractors and Gear Dryers for each station. These tools are crucial for cleaning and drying personal protective equipment (PPE) after each use, ensuring that gear is ready and safe for the next call. This improvement will create a healthier working environment for firefighters by reducing their exposure to harmful carcinogens.
The municipality will apply for this grant, which will support the necessary equipment costs: approximately $7,000 for a Gear Extractor and $11,000 for a Gear Dryer. While the final decision on the grant will be known early next year, the staff recommend budgeting for these items now. If the grant is received, the budgeted amount will be set aside in the Fire Capital Replacement Reserve for future use.
This grant represents a significant step forward in supporting the health and safety of our firefighters and ensuring they can continue their vital work in the community.
