South Huron is looking to secure funding for an important project that could bring new housing opportunities to the area. On September 16th, Don Giberson, the General Manager of Infrastructure and Development, presented a report to the South Huron Council about applying for the Housing Enabling Water System Fund (HEWSF). This grant would help complete a vital sewer project in the south end of Exeter.
The project, known as the London Road South Trunk Sanitary Sewer, is needed to open up space for potential housing development. This area could see as many as 2,100 new homes once the sewer system is finished. While part of the sewer system was built in 2004, a key section remains incomplete, blocking further development.
In April 2024, South Huron applied for the first intake of this grant program but didn’t receive approval. However, the Province has now opened a second round of funding, offering a new opportunity for the municipality. If the application is successful, the grant will cover 73% of the project cost, with South Huron covering the rest through external borrowing.
The deadline for this grant application is November 1st and if approved, the project could start as early as next year. This project is seen as a top priority for South Huron’s growth, as it will allow much-needed housing development to move forward.
