Ontario has appointed David Musyj as the supervisor of London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) following financial concerns and the mass resignation of its board of directors. Musyj, the interim president of LHSC and former head of Windsor Regional Hospital, will report directly to the provincial government to address governance, operational, and financial issues at the hospital. His supervisory term may last up to 18 months, with a final public report at the end.
The entire LHSC board voluntarily stepped down to allow for fresh leadership. Former board chair Matthew Wilson supported Musyj’s appointment, believing it will speed up the hospital’s recovery. In addition to Wilson, board members Lisa Conley, Andrea Dean, Terry Marcus, Tony Malette, John Leitch, Lisa Harrison, Stephen Smith, Heather Wade, Murray Wallace and Joy Warkentin also resigned from their posts.
LHSC is currently dealing with a $150 million deficit, which has already led to layoffs and pay cuts for managers. The hospital has faced public criticism over executive salaries and spending, including nearly half a million dollars spent on international travel for senior staff.
Musyj plans to provide regular updates on his progress and establish an advisory committee for community feedback. Local health advocate Peter Bergmanis welcomed the province’s intervention, calling it a long-overdue step to restore transparency and public confidence in LHSC.
