On October 29th, the Perth County OPP and the Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) will host an important community event to raise awareness about human trafficking.
The free event is open to all and will take place at Mitchell District High School in West Perth. Two guest speakers will be there: Melanie Knights, who has personal experience with trafficking and is now the Executive Director of Bridging Gaps Anti-Human Trafficking, and Detective Sergeant Ashley Horton from the OPP Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, who will discuss the signs, risk factors, and local trends related to human trafficking. There will be time for questions after their presentations.
Several local organizations, including Victim Services Huron Perth, Optimism Place, and the Perth Mobile Crisis Response Team, will also attend to provide support and resources.
Human trafficking is on the rise in Ontario, affecting small towns as well as big cities. Victims, especially vulnerable young people, are often moved using major highways. Many don’t recognize they are being trafficked or are unable to reach out for help.
Parents, teachers, and anyone who works with young people should learn the signs and what to do if they suspect someone is at risk. This event will help the community understand the issue and how to fight it.
While registration is preferred, it’s not required. You can register on Eventbrite by searching for Perth County OPP events.
