With Halloween a few days away, OPP wants to remind trick-or-treaters, parents, and drivers to follow some simple tips for a safe and fun night.
Trick-or-treaters should always walk on sidewalks when available and use crosswalks to cross streets. Parents are encouraged to dress their children in bright colors to make them more visible to drivers, and ensure that masks or face coverings do not block their vision. Creating a “buddy system” before heading out can also help everyone get home safely and avoid walking alone.
Staying in well-lit areas whenever possible is important for visibility, so consider carrying a flashlight or glowsticks. Drivers should expect more pedestrians on the road and should be extra cautious, especially in less common places for foot traffic, like rural roads. It’s important to slow down and be on the lookout for trick-or-treaters who might unexpectedly come out from between parked cars or behind bushes. Never use your phone while driving, as Halloween requires full attention due to increased pedestrian traffic after dark.
