With the arrival of winter, flu season has also officially begun in Huron and Perth counties. Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) has confirmed the first case of influenza for the 2024-2025 season. Alongside the flu, other respiratory illnesses like RSV continue to circulate in the region.
Respiratory illnesses typically spread through droplets from coughing, sneezing, talking, or breathing. Close contact with an infected person or touching contaminated surfaces can also lead to infection.
Simple but effective precautions include frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes with your arm or a tissue, and wearing a mask in crowded or indoor spaces. Staying home when unwell, ensuring good ventilation in indoor areas, and maintaining physical distancing are also encouraged. Vaccines for influenza and COVID-19 remain key defenses, especially for those at higher risk of complications.
Residents are urged to seek medical attention if symptoms worsen, are severe, or persist, particularly if individuals have pre-existing health conditions that increase the risk of severe illness.
