After nearly four decades on Main Street, Bakelaar Jewellers, a cherished family-owned business, is preparing to close its doors in the coming weeks.
The business has a long history, starting in Wingham, Ontario, in 1984. Its current location at 421 Main Street in Exeter opened in 1987. Adrian and Maria took over the business in 2002, moved to Exeter, and have operated Bakelaar Jewellers for the past 22 years.
The couple announced their retirement with mixed emotions, sharing that it’s time to begin a new chapter. Maria reflected on the journey, calling it an “incredible blessing” but adding that they are excited for what lies ahead. She expressed enthusiasm about slowing down, enjoying time with their grandchildren, motorbike rides, and exploring hiking trails.
While acknowledging the challenge of seeing another retail store close in Exeter, Maria noted the changing landscape of the jewellery business as a sign of the times.
Bakelaar Jewellers will be remembered as a beloved part of the community, leaving behind a legacy of excellent service and heartfelt connections.
