Warm weather and up to 10 millimeters of rain may cause minor flooding in the area. Residents are advised to stay away from rivers, streams, and other waterways.
A warm front is bringing rain, with up to 10 millimeters expected over the next 36 hours in the Ausable Bayfield watershed. Starting December 16th, rain combined with temperatures above freezing will likely melt most of the snow on the ground. Recent surveys by the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) show that some areas have a lot of water in the snowpack, which could contribute to high water levels. Even areas with less snow may see flooding in low-lying areas due to snowmelt from upstream.
Rivers and streams are expected to rise quickly starting the evening of December 16th, peaking on December 17th and 18th. While water levels may exceed the banks of many watercourses, major flooding is not expected. Flooding will likely be limited to low-lying, undeveloped areas. The actual extent of flooding depends on how much rain falls and how warm it gets.
All ice should be considered unsafe. People should stay away from watercourses, as slippery and unstable streambanks, snow-covered streambanks, and cold water temperatures pose serious dangers.
This advisory is in effect until 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 19th, unless updated. The ABCA will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if needed.
