The wild fires in Los Angeles are hitting close to home for one of our own, John Staples, who at one time lived in the area and still has many friends who have been affected by the fires.
Staples lived in Santa Monica Canyon, right next door to the Palisades, from 1972 until 2002.
As of right now he’s not sure if his old neighborhood is still standing, but he knows some who have lost their homes.
Staples says wildfires are a part of being in Southern California, with a few taking place every year.
The wildfires, fueled by strong winds, have killed at least 16 people, have destroyed entire communities, and burned 40,000 acres in the greater Los Angeles area.
