OPP is warning residents to be careful when dealing with unknown people wanting access to their homes.
Residents have reported receiving calls where the caller claimed to be from the Ontario Rebate Office and wanted to schedule a home visit for an energy audit. They said the audit would determine if the homeowner qualified for a rebate.
The caller said they would come to the house, check the interior, and review utility bills. After looking at the bills, they would claim the homeowner qualified for a monthly rebate and offer to handle the application. To make themselves seem legitimate, they provided a confirmation number for the visit.
The OPP urges residents to be very cautious about letting unknown people into their homes. Take time to research companies and don’t make quick decisions, even if the offer sounds appealing. Always verify unexpected requests before sharing personal information. If you feel pressured, hang up or delete the message.
Important Tips:
Energy audits or inspections are not required to apply for programs like CEAP, OESP, or LEAP.
Be careful about sharing personal or utility account information.
Ask for the caller’s name, company, and contact number if someone contacts you.
