Huron County OPP is investigating three recent scams where criminals targeted residents using ATM machines at local banks.
On January 18th, at least three incidents happened at two different banks in Exeter and Goderich.
In Exeter, two victims, aged 64 and 67, were using the ATM when a stranger offered to “help” them. During the interaction, the suspect secretly swapped their real bank cards with fake ones and then withdrew money using the stolen PINs. One victim lost $900, and the other lost $1,400.
In Goderich, a 95-year-old victim was using an ATM when their debit card got stuck in the machine. They left the bank, but later discovered that someone had taken $1,500 from the ATM and spent another $2,000 at a local store.
Police are investigating and asking anyone with information to come forward.
Authorities remind the public to be cautious when using ATMs. Be aware of people nearby, never share your PIN, and be careful if someone offers to help. If you suspect fraud, call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
