Strong winds and high water levels have caused an ice jam to form in Port Franks Harbour, leading to flooding in parts of the area.
Recent rain and warm weather have broken up much of the ice in the Ausable River. Winds from offshore have pushed this ice into the harbour, creating a blockage. The ice jam is unpredictable, but it has already caused flooding in Port Franks marinas and on Superior Street, Biddulph Street, Patrick Street, and Riverside Drive.
The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) has issued a flood warning for the affected areas. Water levels upstream of Port Franks have not yet peaked, and strong winds are slowing the river’s flow. ABCA staff are working closely with the Municipality of Lambton Shores to monitor the situation.
Flooded roads may be deeper than they appear and could be washed out. Driving through them is dangerous. With colder temperatures expected, any standing water could freeze, making conditions even more hazardous.
Residents should stay away from fast-moving water and keep children and pets at a safe distance. The flood warning will remain in effect until 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2025, unless conditions change. ABCA will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as needed.
